This painting depicts the Battle of Franklin which was fought on November 30, 1964 in Franklin, Tennessee. This battle was one of the worst disasters for the Confederate States Army, they suffered 6,252 casualties, which included 1,750 who were killed and 3,800 who were wounded. It is estimated that the Union's losses were only 189 killed, 1,033 wounded, and 1,104 missing. There was some speculation that the number of casualties was under-reported by Major General John M. Schofield because of the confusion during his army's hasty nighttime evacuation of Franklin.
